One hundred forty-six high school students will gather at Washburn University for the annual High School Art Day, celebrating their passion for art. Hosted by the Washburn University Art Department, the event offers a variety of workshops led by university art faculty and advanced art education students. These sessions are open exclusively to pre-registered students and provide hands-on learning experiences across different artistic disciplines.

As part of the event, each student will enter one piece in the juried High School Art Day Student Exhibition, on display Oct. 7–17 in the Washburn University Art Building gallery. The exhibition is open during regular building hours, and a free public reception will be held Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 5–7 p.m.

High School Art Day itself takes place Thursday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Students will check in at 8 a.m., with workshops at 9, 10, and 11 a.m. Lunch and the awards ceremony, featuring guest speaker Megan Caldwell, a Washburn Art Department graduate and art educator, will be held from 12–1 p.m., followed by afternoon workshops at 1 and 2 p.m.

The 146 students represent 22 high schools, ranging from Topeka High School to Uniontown High School, 120 miles away. The event is sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences, the art faculty, Washburn Admissions, the Ichabod Shop, the Center for Student Success & Retention, the Memorial Union, Dining Services, and the Mulvane Art Museum.
