The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, alongside city officials, is exploring the possibility of bringing a next-generation nuclear power facility to Hutchinson, which could boost local economic growth and infrastructure. This interest follows TerraPower’s September 23 announcement of a memorandum of understanding with Evergy and the Kansas Department of Commerce to build a Natrium nuclear reactor somewhere in Evergy’s Kansas service area.
Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas and Chamber President Debra Teufel began discussions to position the city as a potential site. The city and Chamber aim to identify suitable industrial locations near 345-kilovolt power lines by December 1. Hutchinson offers advantages such as land zoned for heavy industry, water capacity, highway and rail access, and the USD 308 Career & Technical Education Academy to train local students for construction and technical roles.
While no decisions have been made, officials highlight the opportunity as a step toward innovative, energy-driven economic development along the K-96 corridor.
