The GOP-led Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council has approved $460,000 for a four-day special legislative session on redistricting, according to Kansas House Democrats. The decision was made without public input.
Republicans, who control three of Kansas’ four congressional districts, are seeking to redraw maps that could impact the suburban Kansas City district held by Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids. The session could begin as early as November 7, and costs may be lower if it concludes early.
Democratic leaders criticized the move, calling it politically motivated and a misuse of taxpayer funds. House Minority Leader Brandon Woodard said lawmakers should focus on issues like rising living costs and property taxes instead.
Republican lawmakers, holding a supermajority, have been collecting signatures to call the session themselves, as Governor Laura Kelly is unlikely to do so.
