Schools across Kansas will join students and families in celebrating International Walk and Roll to School Day on Oct. 8, supported by the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. The annual event encourages walking, biking, and rolling to school while promoting safe behaviors and community connections.

This year, 27 schools across the state are participating. Schools can register for the event and access free materials at saferoutes.ksdot.gov/iwrsd.

October is also National Pedestrian Safety Month, a time to highlight the importance of protecting people walking. Children and adults alike are vulnerable on roadways, and events like Walk and Roll to School Day help raise awareness and improve safety for everyone.

Safety reminders for participants and drivers include:

  • Everyone: Follow traffic rules and signals.
  • Drivers: Watch for pedestrians, yield at crosswalks, never pass stopped vehicles at crossings, and exercise caution in low-visibility situations.
  • Pedestrians: Stay alert, use marked crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers, and walk on sidewalks when available.

The event offers a fun way for communities to come together while reinforcing safe practices on the road year-round.
