Weather forecasts show that parts of Kansas, along with some northern and western states, could see bad weather this holiday weekend. If conditions affect the roads, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is ready to respond. Since September, KDOT crews have been preparing by ordering salt, sand, and brine, servicing trucks and equipment, and completing training.
“Whatever the obstacle, KDOT crew members work together and find a way to get the job done,” said Director of Field Operations Ron Hall.
Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed reminded travelers to check road conditions and weather forecasts before heading out and consider delaying trips if needed.
Drivers can check current road conditions at KanDrive.gov or through the KanDrive app. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and know emergency contacts: call *47 for the Kansas Highway Patrol or *KTA for the Turnpike. In emergencies, call 911.
Kansas has about 9,500 miles of highways, and clearing snow can take time, especially while it’s still falling.
