Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced that the Kansas Insurance Department recovered over $16 million for Kansans in 2023, making it the largest single-year recovery in the department’s history. This surpasses the previous year’s recovery total of $7.6 million. Since Commissioner Schmidt assumed office in 2019, the Consumer Assistance Division has recovered more than $35 million for Kansans.

Addressing the complexity of the insurance claims process, Commissioner Schmidt encouraged individuals facing issues to reach out, stating, “If you are having an issue, I want to hear from you. I am proud of the work the Consumer Assistance Division has done to ensure that Kansans are getting the full benefits from their policies.”

Funds categorized as “recovered” are determined when department staff aid individuals requiring support throughout their insurance claims process. In cases where disputes arise between a policyholder and an insurance company, regardless of the insurance type, the Kansas Insurance Department investigates the complaint. Department staff collaborates with both the consumer and the company to guarantee adherence to the insurance policy and proper payment of benefits.
