Devine S. Montoya, 92 of Concordia, KS passed away on March 11, 2024 at the Regent Retirement Home in Wichita, KS. Devine was born in Hooker, OK on January 14, 1932 to Andy Montoya and Lucenda Sanchez.
Devine graduated high school in 1951 from Hooker High School. He went on to attend Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1955 with a degree in Education. Devine’s first teaching job was in Quenemo, KS where he lead the boys basketball team to a state championship in 1960. He came to Concordia, KS in 1963 where he was employed at U.S.D. 333 until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure with the school district he wore many hats including Spanish Teacher, Driver’s Education Instructor, Librarian, Keyboard Teacher, Tennis Coach and Guidance Counselor to name just a few of his many roles.
Devine enjoyed his retirement traveling the world with his wife and family. He loved spending his winters in Arizona golfing and playing tennis. He never passed up an opportunity for a happy hour or a night on the town. Devine was an active member of the Concordia Lion’s Club, Masonic Lodge and Isis Shrine. He was also a member of the former Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Concordia.
He is survived by his sister, 2 sons, 2 step-sons and one step-daughter; 5 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brothers; wife, Barbara, great-granddaughter, and step-grandson.
It was Devine’s wish to be cremated. Friends may call Thursday April 4th from 2pm-5pm at Nutter Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at Nutter Mortuary on Friday, April 5th at 10:30 a.m. with the Very Reverend Shay Craig officiating. Burial of the remains will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, KS. The family suggests that memorials go to the Concordia Lion’s Club in care Nutter’s Mortuary.
