On the evening of May 7, the Wakefield City Council met for their regular May meeting.

Council Member Betsy Striggow-Liebau gave a brief update on the Wakefield PRIDE organization.

City Superintendent Kyle Murphy gave the monthly Superintendent Report. He reported on water leaks within the city and the status of the sewer system. Murphy reported that the Wakefield Pool should be filled by Sunday, May 12.

Clay County General Public Transportation Operations Manager Don Wright spoke to the Council about the potential of stationing a CCGPT van in Wakefield sometime within the coming months.

The Wakefield City Council voted to accept a $2.5 million Kansas Water Office grant to help pay for updates to the city’s wastewater lagoons.

The Council also voted to allow the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus to host two shows on September 4. Councilmember Neal Summerson said the circus “is an excellent thing to bring to town” and invited neighboring towns to join in on the festivities.

Lastly, the Council voted to adjust portions of the firework ordinance to extend the times residents can light fireworks around the Fourth of July. The new ordinance will allow for the lighting of fireworks to take place within city limits on July 1 and 2 until 10 pm, July 3 and 4 until midnight, and July 5 until 10 pm. The new ordinance will be signed into law during the June Wakefield City Council meeting.
