Farmer to Farmer Crisis Prevention Program
The Clay Counts Coalition is taking a significant step towards addressing mental health issues within the agricultural community with its new initiative, the Farmer to Farmer program. This program aims to tackle the alarming rates of suicide in the agriculture sector by providing targeted support and training for those closely connected to farmers.
To introduce the Farmer to Farmer program and provide more information, the Clay Counts Coalition is hosting an event on Thursday, August 1, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Prairieland Partners conference center. The keynote speaker will be Ericka Lysell, who is employed at USD 305 as a behavioral health school liaison with the Mental Health Intervention Team grant. She is passionate about helping those with mental health issues find the support they need to be successful in life. She is also a Master ASIST trainer.
Attendees will learn general information about mental health/wellness and mental disorders as well as risk factors involved with suicide. Lysell will also show how social media affects mental health and how to utilize boundaries when helping others. She will also help attendees make a self-care plan.
Attendees will enjoy a homestyle lasagna dinner provided during the event. Following dinner, Manhatchet Mobile will provide FREE axe-throwing fun from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in front of Prairieland Partners.
“There’s a huge body of research that tells us that suicide is very prevalent in the agriculture field,” said Lori Martin, Community Mobilizer for the Clay Counts Coalition. “As an agricultural community, we feel this should be a primary focus. Our approach involves one-on-one interactions with farmers through their daily contacts, such as their bankers, implement dealers, and seed dealers. By training these individuals, we can encourage struggling farmers to take that crucial extra step towards seeking help.”
