Team Greenleaf will hold its 3rd Annual Turtle Race Event on Saturday, August 3rd at 3:00 p.m. at the Greenleaf American Legion, Post 235. Part of the proceeds from this unique event will go to Team Greenleaf, an organization that supports local youth.
The Turtle Race features a “stuffed” turtle on a stick, designed like the stick horses that many people had as children. Jockeys and their turtles then “race” on an indoor track, compromised of taped squares. Two dice are then rolled, and racers move squares, sort of like a board game.
Denise Farmer, of Legion Post 235, said she got the idea after attending a “horse race” fundraiser event in Clifton. She tweaked it by using turtles and it has turned into a great event for the community.
Farmer said the day is filled with good food, auctioning of the turtles, a Derby Hat contest, and racing fun. Proceeds from the last two years have given $6,000 in scholarships to local youths. Information on this event can be found on the Legion’s Facebook Page.
