The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) has awarded a $62.6 million Bridge Investment Program grant to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) for the 18th Street Bridge Replacement Project in Kansas City, Kansas, as announced by Governor Laura Kelly.
The 18th Street Bridge, a key link on U.S. 69 over the Kansas River, was built in 1959 and has required extensive repairs over the years. Following a 2017 inspection, the bridge was closed for repairs, which extended its life but highlighted the need for a replacement.
A 2019 study by KDOT explored different alternatives, aiming to maintain the river crossing and enhance safety. The new bridge will feature modern design standards, including wider shoulders and aesthetic details consistent with the Lewis and Clark Viaduct. Construction is set to begin in 2025, with a full closure of the bridge expected to last about 24 months.
