An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for Kansas, with heat indices expected to reach around 110 degrees each afternoon from Monday through Thursday. The National Weather Service in Wichita urges residents to take precautions during this period.

Temperatures will rise significantly, leading to dangerous heat conditions. On Monday and Tuesday, heat indices may reach up to 113 degrees in Salina and Topeka, with Wichita and Hutchinson around 110 degrees. By Wednesday and Thursday, the intense heat will continue, affecting areas such as Russell, Emporia, and Coffeyville with similar heat index values.

The National Weather Service warns that heat-related illnesses become more common during extreme weather. Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid direct sunlight. It’s also important to check on relatives and neighbors, especially those who are more vulnerable to heat-related health issues.

To stay safe during the excessive heat, limit outdoor activities, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, unconsciousness. Immediate medical attention is required if heat stroke is suspected.
