The Sedgwick County Zoo announced on their Facebook page that two orphaned black bear cubs are being introduced to their new habitat, and they now have names.
The brother and sister are now known as Takelma (male) and Sama (female). Takelma was named after the Native American people who lived in the region of Oregon where they were found. Sama means “summer” in the native Takelma language, which the zoo said is fitting for the time of year she was rescued.
The two cubs are still too little to be in their habitat alone, but this morning, while supervised, they got to take a few minutes to explore an area of the habitat. The zoo said for now the cubs are getting cared for behind the scenes but will sporadically spend time in the outdoor habitat adjusting to their new surroundings.
Zoo officials said they are thrilled with their progress and will keep everyone posted when they’re ready for regular viewing.
