FHSU Student Documentary ‘Life on the Harvest Run’ Delves into the Challenges and Legacy of Kansas Custom Harvest Crews

Fort Hays State University’s Tiger Media Network recently released the student documentary “Life on the Harvest Run,” which explores the experiences of two Kansas-based custom harvest crews. The film highlights the daily challenges faced by these crews, such as unpredictable weather and equipment failures, and questions if the next generation is ready to take on these difficulties. Custom harvesters travel across the country each summer to help farmers who lack the necessary equipment or face tight deadlines during harvest season, ensuring crops are gathered efficiently.

The documentary focuses on two family-run operations: Brad Befort Harvesting in Hays and Froese Brothers Inc. in Inman. Produced by FHSU students Ryan Schuckman, Raegan Neufeld, and John Billinger, the film includes interviews with custom harvesters ranging in age from 20 to 91, providing both current and historical perspectives. Released on July 25, this project was part of the students’ summer internship with TMN and offered them real-world experience in digital media production and journalism.
