Mahomes Wows with Behind-the-Back Pass in Chiefs’ Preseason Loss to Lions

By Jayson Henderson

Patrick Mahomes added another highlight to his reel during the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason game against the Detroit Lions, completing a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce. The pass, made in response to Kelce running the wrong route, resulted in a first down and set up a field goal. Mahomes finished with 93 passing yards over two series before the Lions rallied for a 24-23 victory on Jake Bates’ last-second field goal.

Despite the loss, Mahomes’ audacious throw stole the spotlight, going viral almost immediately. Kelce’s brother, Jason, and Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas were among those who praised the play on social media.

Carson Wentz took over for Mahomes, throwing a touchdown pass to rookie Xavier Worthy. Nate Sudfeld and Hendon Hooker led Detroit’s offense, with Hooker adding a rushing touchdown. Bates’ game-winning kick capped off the Lions’ comeback.
