Daniel E. “Red” Barnhill, age 56, of Washington, passed away in a motorcycle accident north of Clay Center on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Dan was born on March 11, 1968, at Cozad, Nebraska, the son of Robert E. Barnhill, and Wanda J. (Negley) Weiche. He graduated from Valley Heights High School in 1987. He went on to serve in the US Navy. He married Pamela S. Volle on March 10, 2019 in Washington.
Dan worked as a driver hauling grain for TSI Kansas in Clay Center. He was a member of the Faith Connection Covenant Church in Washington.
Daniel was a loving husband, father, son, and brother. He was quick to make a joke and was always able to make his family laugh. Through his many stories of him and his siblings in their younger years to the many adventures encountered on the road, Daniel always had a perfect story for the occasion. He never backed down from a challenge and would give you the shirt off of his back. Daniel may be gone but his memories and lessons will live on.
Survivors include his wife Pam, his mother Wanda Weiche of Lake City, Florida, his children Andrew M. Barnhill of Topeka and Justin K. Riffey of Paola, a grandson Hunter, ten brothers and sisters: Rhonda Barnhill of Smith Center, Mike (Pamela) Heward of Cambridge, Iowa, Tony (Judy) Heward of Osage City, Tim (Alverta) Heward of Barnes, Lyn (Todd) Sarjent of Lafayette, Indiana, Carmen Johnson of Clay Center, Michelle (Jason) Martin of Orange City, Florida, Lori Dornbusch of Herington, Robin (Sean) Martin of Pleasant Hill, Missouri and Glenna (Kris) Beckley of Wellsville and many nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his dad Robert Barnhill while serving in Vietnam, two nephews Eric Heward and Zachary Jones, his step-dad Glenn Weiche, and grandparents Weston and Eloris Negley.
Burial will be held at Maplewood Cemetery, west of Barnes, at 2:00 pm, on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Military honors were presented by a detail from the US Navy Honors Detail and Shaw Post 235 of the American Legion from Greenleaf. Casket Bearers are Andrew Barnhill, Tony Heward, Sterling Clark, Landon Heward, Martin Volle and Joe Volle. Honorary Bearers are Justin Riffey, Darren Green, Tim Heward and Mike Heward.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the First Christian Church in Washington with Pastor Eli Sweany Officiating. Gay Lynn Manning is the musician, congregational hymns included “Amazing Grace” and “When We All Get To Heaven”.
