CCCHS Board Report for September

By Payton Tholstrup

Bud Young, Principal of Clay Center Community High School (CCCHS) updated the school board on what is currently happening at CCCHS.

Construction of The Tiger House began the week of September 3rd. The floor joists were delivered August 28th, and students have been busy preparing the site. The students have also been taking shop safety and tool identification tests.

This year, school started before athletic practice began. According to Mr. Young, there have been mixed reviews about this. Some students said they liked starting school before athletics practices because it allowed them to get into the school routine.

There are 42 students in internships this year.

Quite a few students are also taking dual credit classes. 45 students are in English Comp; 18 are in College Speech, 22 are in College Algebra; and 7 are in Calculus.

Counselors at CCCHS are also seeking students interested in obtaining their CDL while in school. Getting a CDL in high school would be a much cheaper alternative than waiting until after high school. Obtaining the CDL at CCCHS would cost around $200, while obtaining it after high school would cost upwards of $1700.

Athletic numbers were also reported.

Football – 42

Cheer – 11

Cross County Girls – 9

Cross Country Boys

Girls Golf – 4

Girls Tennis – 14

Volleyball – 37

Mr. Young said the new cell phone policy has been well received by students. There have also been a lot of questions along the way. Students are doing great at asking for permission to use their cell phone. “We have students step into an office or a classroom that is not being used,” he said. Using the phone away from a large group is an important piece of digital citizenship. Staff members were asked to model not using their devices if possible.

It was also decided by STUCO that the Homecoming Dance will be a formal event and there will be no Fall Ball.

Winter Homecoming will also be a formal event.
