Kansas State University Joins Program to Address Rural Veterinarian Shortage, Support Veterinary Students’ Careers

Kansas State University has joined a pilot program by the Farm Journal Foundation aimed at helping veterinary students develop their careers and address the shortage of veterinarians in rural areas. The Veterinary Workforce Solutions Program, which involves nine schools, focuses on challenges in the food animal veterinary field. Supported by the Zoetis Foundation, the program helps students manage debt, learn business skills, and engage with rural communities.

Currently, the U.S. faces a shortage of veterinarians for livestock, especially in over 900 counties. Only 3-4% of new graduates enter this field, compared to 40% decades ago. The program, with guidance from experienced mentors, aims to boost the number of rural veterinarians. So far, 450 students and professionals have participated, with many expressing interest in starting businesses and seeking mentorship.
