Approximately 20 people attended a community meeting hosted by Washington County Hospital to discuss a new daycare plan. CEO Roxanne Schottel explained that the hospital wants to start a daycare to address staffing issues, as many potential employees need childcare. Initially, the hospital planned to renovate a former nursing home, but after failing to secure a grant, they purchased a daycare-ready house.
Despite providing rent-free space and utilities, no one has applied to run the daycare. Attendees discussed the challenges of running a daycare, including the demanding schedule and lack of flexibility, which contribute to the shortage of providers.
Schottel and hospital board member Justin Dragastin emphasized their commitment to finding a solution, offering to support whoever takes on the role. The community also acknowledged that the shortage would worsen as longtime daycare providers retire in the coming years.
