The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) said in a press release it was alerted to a text message scam, or “smishing,” using the name of DriveKS, the state’s new toll payment system. The fraudulent messages include a photo of the DriveKS logo, claiming unpaid balances, and threatening additional fees.
Customers should be cautious:
- Do not click on links in unsolicited texts.
- KTA does not send unsolicited text messages or charge extra fees as mentioned in the scam.
- KTA does not send texts for toll payments.
Random phone numbers appear to be targeted, unrelated to actual toll accounts. Similar scams have been reported nationwide since April.
