On Saturday, September 21, JetBlue Flight 1189 from New York’s JFK to San Diego made an emergency landing at Salina Regional Airport after the crew received a smoke alert in the cargo hold. According to a release, the Airbus A320, carrying 146 passengers and crew, landed safely on Runway 17 around 6:30 p.m.
The Salina Airport Authority activated its “Alert III” emergency protocol, deploying the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team and the Salina Fire Department. Passengers were deplaned onto the AvFlight Salina FBO and shuttled to the M.J. Kennedy Terminal.
After landing, mechanics from 1 Vision Aviation inspected the aircraft and found no signs of smoke or fire, confirming the alert was a false alarm.
While waiting for a replacement flight, JetBlue provided passengers with food, water, and amenities. Staff, alongside SkyWest ground crew and TSA personnel, worked to ensure comfort, especially for families with young children.
A rescue flight arrived around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 22, and departed with passengers at approximately 3:00 a.m. for San Diego.
This incident highlights the professionalism and quick response of the Salina Airport Authority, SkyWest crew, TSA, and AvFlight Salina staff, ensuring passenger safety and support. The FAA is conducting a routine investigation into the event.
