Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach discussed a bill likely to resurface in the 2025 Kansas Legislature during a Military Affairs Council breakfast in Junction City on September 26th.
The proposed legislation aims to prevent foreign national corporations from purchasing Kansas agricultural land. Kobach highlighted concerns over foreign ownership, particularly by the Chinese government, which he said could use nontraditional surveillance and leverage food production control against the U.S. Additionally, he raised concerns about surveillance near U.S. military installations.
Although the bill did not pass in Kansas previously, similar measures have been approved in 24 states, including Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and South Dakota.
Presently, 35.2 million acres of land in the United States are owned by foreign corporations. The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Council hosted the event at the Geary County Convention Center.
