Kansas Marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, Urging Focus on Safety and Awareness

Pedestrians of all ages face risks while walking. Between 2019 and 2023, 179 pedestrians in Kansas, aged 4 to 93, were killed in vehicle-related incidents. October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, a reminder to consider the factors contributing to pedestrian accidents and to prioritize safety for everyone.

Walking, the oldest form of transportation should always be safe and accessible. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and other organizations are working to enhance pedestrian safety awareness.

In support of International Walk and Roll to School Day on October 9, KDOT encourages schools and communities to participate through its Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. Schools can register and access free event planning toolkits, including flyers, banners, signs, and safety fact sheets.

You can register or learn more about SRTS here.
