Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns emphasized the importance of using technology in farming to help feed the world. Speaking at the Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems conference, he noted that without adopting new technologies, there will be challenges in food production. Johanns pointed out that U.S. companies are investing in agricultural technology, but lengthy approval processes often delay its implementation, which can hurt those in need. He criticized government regulations that hinder access to these advancements.
Johanns also highlighted the success of developing countries in boosting local exports and reducing poverty through trade. He argued that fair trade is essential to combating hunger and promoting stability.
At the conference, Craig Gundersen discussed how issues with the meat industry can affect food security, while scientist Peer Ederer presented on the benefits of livestock production for nutrition, ecology, and economy. He warned against blaming animal agriculture for methane emissions without understanding the full context. The Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems lecture series aims to educate on critical global food issues.
