Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab announced on October 10 that he has spoken with USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy about the postal service’s operational failures in handling approximately 1,000 primary election ballots from Kansas. Schwab has made multiple efforts to work with the USPS to resolve these issues ahead of the November General Election.

Following an investigation, DeJoy acknowledged errors in processing Kansas’ primary ballots and assured Schwab that the USPS would implement measures to prevent similar issues in the upcoming election. While Schwab expressed understanding of the USPS’s challenges, he emphasized the risks associated with returning ballots by mail.

To improve ballot security, Schwab encouraged voters to consider alternative ways to return mail ballots, such as dropping them off at the county election office, advance voting locations, election day polling sites, or county-owned drop boxes. For those who must use the mail, USPS recommends mailing ballots at least seven days before the county’s receipt deadline.
