USDA Investment to Help Connect Farms, People, and Businesses Across Cloud, Republic, and Washington Counties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Kansas Director Christy Davis announced a $6.6 million investment to expand high-speed internet access in northeast Kansas. Funded through the USDA’s ReConnect Program, this initiative aims to improve connectivity for rural residents, farmers, and businesses, supporting economic growth and security.

The funding will benefit areas in Cloud, Republic, and Washington counties, where J.B.N. Telephone Company, Inc. will use a $6.6 million loan to build a fiber-to-the-premises network. This project will bring reliable internet to 329 people, seven businesses, and 178 farms.

The Kansas announcement is part of a broader national effort impacting ten states. Under the Biden-Harris Administration, the USDA is making significant investments to strengthen rural infrastructure, foster resilient food systems, support equitable access to resources, and promote climate-smart practices. This project highlights USDA’s commitment to enhancing rural prosperity and bridging the digital divide.
