Governor Laura Kelly, alongside Evergy executives and legislative leaders, announced that Evergy will invest over $2 billion to build two new natural gas power plants in Kansas, each generating 705 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Combined, these plants will supply more than 1,400 MW of reliable energy. The Sumner County plant is expected to be operational by 2029, and the Reno County plant by 2030.

Each plant’s construction will create over 500 jobs. Once operational, they will provide 20 to 40 well-paying skilled jobs, with annual salaries exceeding $90,000, and contribute over $500 million in property taxes after a 10-year exemption.

Since 2019, Governor Kelly’s administration has spearheaded 1,284 development projects, attracting nearly $20 billion in investments and creating around 69,000 jobs. Earlier this year, Governor Kelly signed a bipartisan bill, House Bill 2527, which encourages investment in electric infrastructure. This law helps Kansas attract more investments, boosts economic growth, and saves residents money on energy costs.
