Community Memorial Healthcare (CMH) in Marysville has announced it will suspend labor and delivery services starting December 31, 2024, while evaluating the future of its obstetrics (OB) program.
Hospital administrator Curtis Hawkinson cited recent medical staff changes impacting the program’s sustainability, particularly as CMH prepares to operate with only two OB physicians following the departure of Drs. Danielle Wurtz and Haley Lowell.
Over the past 20 years, births at CMH have declined by 50%, with fewer than 40 expected in 2024, reflecting a trend in rural healthcare due to population decline.
To address financial strains exacerbated by decreased reimbursements and the end of COVID-19 aid, CMH is seeking community approval for a half-cent sales tax renewal to support hospital operations. Hospital leaders noted that while the OB program is not profitable, it fills a critical local need and aligns with CMH’s mission to serve the community.
