With Daylight Savings Time (DST) ending this weekend here are some facts as to why 2:00 AM was established as the designated time.
- When DST was first being established, no trains were leaving New York City train stations at 2:00 AM on Sundays. This meant that changing the clocks at 2:00 AM would have the least impact on train travel across the country.
- Changing the clocks at 2:00 AM means that 1:59 AM on a Sunday is still Sunday when the time change hits and goes back to 1:00 AM on Sunday. This prevents the day from switching to yesterday, which would be confusing.
- Most people are at home at 2:00 AM, so the change is less likely to impact people’s lives.
- The change occurs before early shift workers and early churchgoers, so it doesn’t impact many bars and restaurants.
The start and end dates of DST are set by federal law. In the United States, DST ends on the first Sunday in November, when clocks are turned back at 2:00 AM local time to read 1:00 AM.
