he Lighthouse for Christ, local non-profit and thrift store, has unveiled a new website. The organization has been a staple in Clay Center since the 1970s, but their online presence to-date has been on the social media platform, Facebook.
“The Lighthouse Facebook page has been great for interacting with the community and posting updates,” says Greta Hadduck, Assistant Director. “But posts get lost as time goes on. There is so much information that doesn’t typically change – hours, donation guidelines, instructions for referrals – that needs to be easily accessible at all times.”
Abby Sprague, Director of The Lighthouse, has seen the need for a website for years.
“I’m grateful we were able to create the website to bring information and resources directly to the community. Now, it’s much easier for people to see what services we offer and find ways they can personally get involved. If you’re out shopping at Sam’s Club or Aldi and decide to pick up some needed items for the pantry, you can now easily check the list on our website. You could also choose to give through the new online giving option, which lets people set up automatic recurring donations at any amount they choose. Another thing I’m excited for is being able to route referrals to the assistance page so they can know how to start the referral process and have access to applications.”
Several people were part of getting the site live. Local website designer, Kelsey Winter, created the site and provided website training. Clay Griffiths, Sprague’s husband, obtained the domain and set up key components to get software features up and running. Meanwhile, Hadduck integrated the donation platform. She will be the primary site admin going forward.
The website includes an overview of what The Lighthouse does, how to contact the board and staff, a calendar, information on how to donate food and clothing, an online donation portal, volunteer guidelines and applications, and information for those seeking assistance.
“I know from my past experience in website work that the job is never done,” Hadduck said. “I want to keep it up-to-date, and as we gather feedback and assess what would be helpful to its users, we will adjust accordingly.”
She said an additional goal is to compile a comprehensive resource directory of local, state, and federal programs to provide alongside our services; everything from utility bill assistance to using public transportation in Clay Center.”
“It’s easy to get discouraged and feel like you don’t have a lot of power to make things better. I am so proud of The Lighthouse’s mission. For our referrals, it provides a way to improve their life circumstances and connection to people who care. For volunteers, it provides an opportunity to practice their belief in a call to practice being a disciple of Christ in our community.”
