A Sedgwick County resident recently received a letter attempting to exploit a stranger’s life insurance policy. The District Attorney’s Investigations Division has received the letter, which appears to be from a law firm offering an “easy way” to claim money from someone else’s life insurance policy.
The letter claims that a deceased client has an unclaimed life insurance policy worth millions. Because the recipient supposedly shares the same last name and nationality as the deceased, the “lawyer” promises to add their name to the policy and split the proceeds between them, the law firm, and a charity. The letter urges the recipient to keep the information secret and contact them immediately via email.
However, this is a scam. The so-called lawyer is a fraud, and responding to the email will likely result in requests for personal information, money, or both. The life insurance policy does not exist.
If you receive a similar letter, do not respond. Never share your personal information with someone who contacts you unsolicited, and never send cash, gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. It’s also important to inform friends and family to help them spot scams like this. Finally, report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. By doing so, you help others avoid falling victim to similar scams.
