Topics discussed during the Clay County Commissioners’ regular weekly meeting on November 18th included: road signs, asphalt cracking, interviews, Quest Labs, wage increases, and more.
Bobby Shomper, Highway Administrator, reported to the Board that in October eight road signs were stolen and 15 were knocked down or run over by vehicles. He spoke of the large expense it costs the County to replace these signs. Shomper also reported that they are having issues with the new asphalt laid on Hackberry Rd cracking. He stated that he reported it to APAC, and they are to come out and check on the issues with the new asphalt.
Alec Trembath, EMS Director, reported to the Board that the Department held interviews for the vacant Captain’s position. Nothing was stated on whether they have offered anyone the position.
Pam Kemp, Emergency Manager, reported that she attended an After Action Review for a Cloud County Exercise. She stated that it was very useful, and several ideas came from the review. She also stated that she held a Statewide class on Animal Sheltering in a disaster. She also reported that BNSF requested a permit to build a bridge in the Flood Plain, stating that BNSF would have to request a permit from the State of Kansas due to it being in the Flood Plain.
Dana Rickley, County Health Director, discussed with the Board personnel and the job duties of certain positions in the Health Department. Rickley also stated that she has been working with Quest Labs to provide a service to all County employees and some State employees on a Lab Service to those with State Health Insurance.
Alan Benninga, Sheriff, reported that the Department has been very busy working accidents and other issues within the County.
The Board discussed several different options for the 2025 wage increases for County employees. Motion was made to give a $1.00 per hour raise for the 2025 year for all County positions and employees, passing unanimously.
