By: Ryan Duey

The Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks (KDWP) will host a variety of First Day Hikes on January 1st throughout the state. Locally KDWP will be kicking off the new year with a hike along Eagle Ridge Trail at Milford State Park in Geary County. The public is encouraged to meet State Park staff at 1:00 p.m.

The trail will consist of a 2.5-mile moderately difficult hike featuring various native vegetation, trees, wildlife, and a great view of Rush Creek Cove on the Milford Reservoir.

KDWP Staff encourages participants to come prepared with items such as water, snacks, appropriate clothing for the weather and terrain, binoculars, and a camera. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash.

Participants are asked to consider bringing and donating perishable food items for the local food pantry. A State Park daily pass is required and can be purchased at the self-pay kiosk that day, 2025 State Park vehicle permit holders do not need a day pass.

This national event is an opportunity for individuals and families to start the new year off outdoors with a healthy hike through America’s State Parks.
