Haley Hynek gives blood for a very personal reason: four years ago, she received four units of blood and two plasma transfusions to save her life during a post-partum hemorrhage.
“Post-partum hemorrhage is a really scary thing. Lots of people who are pregnant or having
babies don’t expect that to happen, and doing something so simple as donating blood can make
an impact at a time that is supposed to be so happy for a family,” said Hynek.
Now she is committed to giving back. She personally donated twice last year, but blood
donation quickly became a family affair. Her uncle and sister are regular blood donors. Her
father, cousin and best friend also donated blood in her name while she was returning to health.
She even took the time to explain to her daughter, now four years old, about what she was
doing.
“She was looking at the bandages they put on me after giving and was so curious about it. We
had some really good conversations about what it’s like to give blood, and how sometimes other
people need it more than we do,” she said.
The next opportunity to give like Haley in Manhattan is at Pottorf Hall in Cico Park from Jan 23-
24.
Pottorf Hall
1710 Avery Avenue
Manhattan, KS 66503
Thursday, Jan. 23 – 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 24 – 7:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
For her next goal, Hynek wants to try a Power Red donation. “When I gave in September, they
were explaining that it helps give a double donation without a whole lot more effort, so I figured
a little bit of extra time would be well worth it.”
