Red Cross Urges Action During Community Risk Reduction Week to Prevent Home Fires and Save Lives

During Community Risk Reduction Week (January 20-26), the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas is urging everyone to take steps to prevent home fires. Through its Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross has saved over 2,000 lives, installed nearly 3 million smoke alarms, and made over 1.2 million households safer. Despite progress, home fires remain the most common disaster in the U.S., making this work crucial. Volunteers and partners have helped install more than 2.6 million free smoke alarms nationwide.

The Red Cross is collaborating with community partners to educate families, particularly children, about fire safety. Each day, home fires claim seven lives, but having working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of death by half. The Sound the Alarm events, part of the Home Fire Campaign, have already saved over 2,200 lives and installed more than 2.6 million smoke alarms.
