The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is increasing safety and promoting health for students walking, biking, or rolling to school by providing more resources and funding. The program supports local areas in improving both infrastructure and non-infrastructure plans for the present and future.
“Being active before school helps students concentrate and improves alertness and memory,” said Ann Katt, KDOT’s SRTS Coordinator. “Students arrive and are ready to learn.”
As part of this initiative, the first SRTS Strategic Action Plan has been published, detailing past progress and future strategies. Over the past 18 months, KDOT has conducted a statewide online survey, held workshops for advisory committee members, and engaged with various focus groups to gather feedback from stakeholders and the public.
This information will help KDOT prioritize efforts and expand multimodal opportunities throughout the state.
