K-State Athletics Boosts Local Economy

A study by Tripp Umbach found that K-State Athletics generates over $486 million in economic activity for Manhattan and Kansas. The study, using 2022-23 data, also found that the department supports more than 3,850 jobs.

K-State Athletics contributed $26.2 million in tax revenue to state and local governments, with $21 million directly benefiting Manhattan. Visitor spending played a major role, with over $161 million spent in Manhattan and $201 million across Kansas. The 450 student-athletes living in the area accounted for $9.1 million in spending.

Game days bring thousands of fans to Manhattan, boosting local businesses like restaurants, hotels, and shops. In 2023, K-State Athletics hosted 527,280 ticketed event attendees, with many more attending non-ticketed games.

Athletics Director Gene Taylor emphasized the economic value of sports, noting the strong connection between K-State events and the local economy.
