KDHE Takes Over Youth Risk Behavior Survey to Enhance Adolescent Health Initiatives

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will now oversee the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in Kansas. This survey collects data on high school students’ health behaviors, helping shape programs and policies that support youth well-being.

Conducted nationwide every two years since 1990, the YRBS tracks behaviors that impact adolescent health and safety. By analyzing this data, KDHE can collaborate with schools and communities to develop targeted interventions addressing youth needs. The transition from the Kansas State Department of Education allows KDHE to integrate survey findings directly into public health initiatives.

The YRBS covers topics such as:

Nutrition, physical activity, and weight status

Bullying

Mental health and suicide

Tobacco, alcohol, and drug use

Sexual behaviors related to STDs, HIV, and unintended pregnancy

Behaviors leading to injuries or violence

Currently, 50 randomly selected high schools participate, with students in grades 9-12 anonymously completing the survey. Participation is voluntary, with parental consent required, and no personal identifiers are collected. Surveys take one class period, minimizing disruption.

KDHE is committed to using YRBS data to improve youth health, working with schools, parents, and communities to turn insights into meaningful action.
