The Midwest Open Geocaching Adventure (MOGA) 2025 will bring people from across the country to Abilene during the final weekend of March, with the event taking place on Saturday, March 29th, at Sterl Hall, starting at 8:00 a.m. This competitive event will feature both individual and team competitions.
Ryan Semmel, event coordinator, said they expect 300 to 500 people at the weekend event. He said geocaching is an outdoor type of scavenger hunt that is suited for all ages.
“Geocaching is an outdoor activity that’s fun for all ages. It’s a worldwide scavenger hunt that uses GPS to find containers that are placed by other geocachers. They can be hidden anywhere from in plain sight to hidden very well.”
“All of the events that we’re having during the weekend are free to the public. We will have some competitions that will take place down in Brown’s Park, too.”
The city of Abilene will also be launching a Geotour for the public, beginning the morning of March 25th. Semmel said 15 specific geocaches will be hidden around the city. Those who complete the Geotour will receive a prize.
The MOGA competitions will all take place in Brown’s Park. Semmel gave some detail on the competitions.
“Contestants will have two and a half hours to go out and find as many caches as they can. Individual competitions are broken down by male and female with four age categories, and with the team competitions, we average out the team’s age. Prizes are given to first, second, and third place.”
All are welcome to Sterl Hall on Saturday, whether you’re a seasoned geocacher or have never tried geocaching but would like to learn about it.
