ABILENE, KS — The Community Foundation of Dickinson County welcomed a sold-out crowd to its 26th Annual Meeting, celebrating community volunteers, statewide recognition, and a shared commitment to growing a stronger future for all of Dickinson County.

Held under the theme “To the Stars,” the event reflected the Foundation’s continued progress and aspirations for the years ahead. That momentum was emphasized by the announcement that the Foundation was named a 2024 To the Stars: Kansas Business Award recipient by the Kansas Department of Commerce. The award honors nonprofit excellence and recognizes organizations that help their communities thrive through service and innovation.

Two remarkable individuals were honored for their long-standing dedication and service.

Deanna Whitehair was named Quiet Hero for nearly 40 years of faithful volunteering at the local food and clothing pantry. Her service has been a steady source of support and kindness in the community.

Susan Mueller received the Volunteer of the Year award for capturing community memories as a school sports photographer, volunteering at the library, and sharing her animals with children. Her joyful spirit has touched many lives across the county.

The Foundation also reflected on the opportunities ahead, as Dickinson County prepares for a significant generational shift in resources. An estimated $1.1 billion is expected to transfer between generations over the next 20 years. Capturing just 5 percent of that total — approximately $56 million — could create a lasting source of support for local nonprofits and the communities they serve.

As part of the evening’s celebration, the Foundation awarded a total of $1,500 in grants through a special drawing to five local nonprofit organizations: CORE Community, The HOPE Center, Quality Life Coalition (QLC), Old Abilene Town, and the Dickinson County Historical Society. Each organization plays a key role in cultivating a vibrant, resilient community.

“For 26 years, the Foundation has helped plant seeds of opportunity across Dickinson County,” said Executive Director Elizabeth Weese. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our nonprofit partners, those seeds are growing into a legacy of impact that will continue to benefit future generations.”
