Seeing a need to expand community dog training services in Junction City, Emily Reid, Owner of Common Scents Dog Training, recently opened a new facility in Junction City in hopes of helping not just dogs and their families, but also fostering community involvement and education.
Reid has partnered with the Junction City Animal Shelter for the last couple of years. The Shelter has had a large influx of dogs come to them, filling the shelter. Reid spoke about partnering with the Shelter.
“Our goal is to educate the community about all things dog in hopes of keeping dogs off the streets and out of the shelter.”
“With that in mind, we have partnered with the Junction City Animal Shelter, and we provide every adopter with our free ‘Intro to Dog Training’ course.”
“Opening a place in Junction City means that hopefully we can help more dogs stay in their homes.”
Reid has over a decade of dog training experience, training dogs throughout the Flint Hills region. Her work includes training dogs that people don’t think can be changed. She isn’t afraid of handling the most fearful and aggressive dogs. She emphasized that no dog is untrainable, even older dogs and the most aggressive dogs can benefit from these services.
She said strays and untrained dogs are not just a problem for their handlers, but the entire community.
“Training your dog isn’t just about having a well-behaved pet; it’s much bigger than that. It’s about safety; it’s about a better quality of life for both you and your dog.”
“A trained dog is less likely to run into danger, bite out of fear, and just be welcomed into more public spaces.”
“Your actions with your dog affect the community as a whole, even if it doesn’t seem like it. An off-leashed dog with no recall, a stray dog, a fearful dog; all of those things impact other people and our community as a whole.”
Reid hopes that opening a facility in Junction City, along with partnering with the Junction City Animal Shelter, will keep more dogs in their homes and out of the Shelter.
