More than 50 Concordia residents recently attended a public hearing to discuss a proposed $17 million community center.
Mayor Amy Jackson opened the session, which supports the city’s $2.5 million CDBG Blueprint to Build grant application. Parks and Recreation Director Chris Atkins outlined the plan, citing goals of wellness, connection, and quality of life.
Funding would include $5 million in cost-share grants, $2 million in donations, and a $10 million USDA loan, repaid through a 1% sales tax. Commissioner Chuck Lambertz noted Concordia’s “pull rate,” with 40% of sales tax revenue coming from outside the city.
Supporters praised the center’s benefits for all ages, while opponents raised concerns over accessibility and financial burden. Proposed features include gym courts, a walking track, multipurpose rooms, and pickleball space. Commissioners will gather feedback and later allow residents to vote.
