Halstead is inviting visitors to explore its history, culture, and community spirit on Saturday, Sept. 6, ahead of the annual Barely Competitive Picnic Contest. The daylong event highlights the town’s role as a filming location for the classic movie Picnic while giving guests a chance to discover what Halstead calls “The Biggest Little City in Kansas.”
From historic landmarks to local businesses, attractions will open their doors for behind-the-scenes experiences. Activities include a mausoleum tour, a cookie cutter demonstration at Bobbi’s, and visits to three historic barns. The schedule also features community gatherings: The Stump at the Halstead Museum Dock at 10 a.m., a watermelon feed at the museum from 2 to 4 p.m., and a community picnic at Riverside Park starting at 6 p.m. Organizers say the event is designed like an open house, allowing visitors to create their own adventure while enjoying Halstead’s small-town charm and big-city offerings.
