In today’s workplaces and communities, four—or even five—generations often work side by side. Each has been shaped by unique forces—technological advancements, access to information and defining cultural events—that form expectations, communication styles and needs. Sometimes those differences feel like friction. But, as facilitator Emily Lehning, PhD, explains, “understanding these dynamics is critical to turning potential conflict into collaboration and innovation.”
Lehning will lead a free professional development session, From Workplace to Main Street: Unlocking the Potential of Intergenerational Leadership, on Tuesday, September 16, from 8–9 a.m. at 809 Broadway in downtown Marysville. The event is sponsored by OneMarysville. Space is limited, and reservations are encouraged.
Lehning emphasizes that intergenerational leadership isn’t just a workplace issue—it touches nearly every part of life. “Businesses, non-profits, community boards, volunteer groups, even civic and faith-based organizations are navigating how to connect across age groups,” she says. “When leaders understand how to engage people of all generations, they strengthen not only their companies but also the fabric of their communities.”
She brings nearly 20 years of leadership experience, having worked with teams in business, agriculture, higher education and non-profits. She and her husband also own a small business in Westmoreland, Kansas, where they see firsthand how important it is for generations to work together in sustaining rural communities. “These experiences fuel my passion as a facilitator and coach to help leaders move beyond stereotypes and instead leverage the unique strengths each generation brings,” she says.
Participants can expect to leave with both inspiration and practical tools. “My goal is for leaders to walk away inspired and equipped to harness intergenerational dynamics as a competitive advantage and a community strength,” Lehning notes.
The session is free to attend, but space is limited. Coffee and breakfast sweets will be served. To reserve a spot, call 785-562-3101 or email wayne@onemarysville.com.
