Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced that more than $26 million was recovered for Kansans in 2024 through the Life Insurance Policy Locator (LIPL). Since 2019, the Kansas Department of Insurance has helped residents claim over $97 million from lost or unclaimed life insurance policies.
The LIPL, offered by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, is a free and confidential tool to search for lost life insurance policies. Anyone who is a beneficiary, executor, or legal representative of a deceased person can submit a search request online at https://eapps.naic.org/life-policy-locator/. Insurance companies then check their records and contact the requester if a policy is found, usually within 90 business days.
If a policy’s owner cannot be located, the unclaimed money is eventually turned over to the state. Kansans can check for these funds through the Kansas State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property division at https://missingmoney.ks.gov/.
Life insurance can be an important financial tool for families. The Department recommends consulting its Life, Annuities, and Long-Term Care Shopper’s Guide before buying a policy. For help with an existing policy, contact the Kansas Department of Insurance at 785-296-3071 or KDOI@ks.gov.
