During a congressional hearing on Tuesday, Senator Jerry Moran spoke about the challenges faced by veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCID). He welcomed witnesses and emphasized the nation’s responsibility to provide quality care for those who served.

Moran highlighted the courage and resilience of veterans living with SCID, noting that many begin a new, often difficult journey upon returning home or receiving a life-changing diagnosis. These veterans face physical and emotional challenges that require specialized care, innovative technology, and strong support systems.

The hearing focused on the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) SCID system of care, examining both successes and areas needing improvement. Moran stressed the importance of timely and efficient access to care and benefits, as well as ensuring veterans and caregivers have the necessary resources and support.

Witnesses included Navy veteran Shelly Hoover, living with ALS since 2013 and testifying via a speech-generation device with eye-gaze technology; ALS advocate Mandy Bailey; Marine Corps veteran spouse and caregiver Mary Ward; and Army veteran Robert Thomas, National President of the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Moran said the testimony would provide firsthand insight into the challenges of living with SCID and guide efforts to strengthen VA support for veterans and their families.

He concluded by thanking the witnesses for their service and advocacy, then yielded to Ranking Member Senator Richard Blumenthal.
