Royals reliever Lucas Erceg’s 2025 season ended Friday when he was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder fatigue, a week before the regular season concludes. Tests revealed a mild shoulder impingement, and the team opted to prioritize his long-term health over risking further injury with postseason hopes nearly gone.
Erceg, 30, posted a 2.64 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings, serving as a key setup man for closer Carlos Estévez. His eight wins rank third among American League relievers, and his 23 holds are tied for seventh.
The Royals reinstated right-hander Steven Cruz from the injured list to fill Erceg’s spot. Cruz had been sidelined with a shoulder injury and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha. The team expects Erceg to be fully healthy for Spring Training in 2026.
