The Dickinson County Historical Society (DCHS) in Abilene will host an open house on Sunday, October 5th, of its new attractions at the Heritage Center from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. It will include refreshments, a dedication ceremony, live demonstrations, and the grand unveiling of Heritage Hall’s new Farm Toy Museum, one of only two in the nation, and more.
Austin Anders, DCHS Director, said the museum will feature over 1,000 farm toys, graciously donated by John and Kathy Gruber of Abilene. He spoke about the Open House.
“We’ll start with a dedication at 1.30. The entire village in the back will be opened up.”
“We’ll have blacksmiths going, the carousel running on the steam engine. The donors of the farm tour museum will be there to talk to people and answer questions, and things like that.”
“We will have cookies, tea, and water in our new Heritage Hall Space, which is the other thing that we are promoting.”
Anders said the Heritage Hall Event Space addition was finished this past Spring.
“It’s a multi-purpose room, so that not only can we have our regular and annual meetings, but we can also have our educational things like Pioneer Camp.”
“We’ll have presenters come in and present different types of history throughout, so different things like that.”
DCHS is excited to have the public see all the new features on October 5th.
“We’re very, very excited! We haven’t had this much excitement as far as building is concerned in probably a couple of decades. So, we want to share our history with the public.”
