Kansas Senator Jerry Moran rose on the Senate floor this week to honor the life and sacrifice of Hays Police Sergeant Scott Heimann, who was killed in the line of duty on Sunday, September 28. Sergeant Heimann, 34, was responding to a domestic violence call when he was shot. He later died from his injuries.
Moran, who grew up in Hays, described the community as a place where people know one another and rally together in times of grief.
“My hometown of Hayes’ population, about 21,000, is a tight-knit community where people look out for their neighbors. They care for those in need, and they protect the vulnerable,” said Sen. Moran. “Sergeant Heimman embodied the best of small-town Kansas values, living a life of integrity, and devotion and courage despite the dangers he faced each and every day.”
Heimann graduated from Thomas More Prep-Marian and attended the University of Kansas before joining the Hays Police Department in 2016. An Eagle Scout and member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, he is survived by his wife, Beth, their two children, and his parents.
Moran asked his colleagues in the Senate to join him in offering sympathy and gratitude to Heimann’s family and the Hays community.
