Kansas State University Salina is celebrating 60 years of innovation and education in aerospace and technology. Originally built in 1942 as Smoky Hill Army Airfield and later known as Schilling Air Force Base, the site became Schilling Institute in 1965, offering Kansas’ first computer science degree and strong programs in aviation and engineering technology. Over the years, the campus evolved into the Kansas College of Technology before merging with Kansas State University in 1991.

Today, K-State Salina is recognized nationally for its professional pilot and drone programs, as well as its leadership in emerging technologies. Notable milestones include supporting the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer mission in 2005 and launching one of the nation’s first bachelor’s degrees in Uncrewed Aircraft Systems in 2008. The campus continues to expand through partnerships such as a $41 million collaboration with Pure Imagination Studios to build the Kansas Artificial Intelligence Research and Entertainment Studio (K-AIRES).

To mark its 60th anniversary, K-State Salina will host a celebration on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 5–7 p.m. at the Salina Selfie Station, featuring Willie the Wildcat and community festivities.
